Bollone, Church of San Michele Arcangelo

Churches of Val Vestino

At the entrance to the village there is a square adorned with an old washhouse, from which narrow streets branch out that seem to overlap.

The church, dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo (St Michael the Archangel), is of Lombard origin and was built between the seventh and eighth centuries. It was built in its current form in 1537 and then rebuilt in 1875 by the curate Don Bartolomeo Iseppi. Previously, the famous botanist Don Pietro Porta served as curate from 1864 to 1870.

In 1919, it obtained parish status, separating from the parish of Turano, along with the church of Sant’Antonio Abate in Magasa.

The church underwent renovation in the early decades of the 20th century and was reconsecrated on 14 August, 1960, by the Bishop of Trento, Monsignor Oreste Rauzi. Between 1971 and 1979, a marble altar was installed in front of the high altar.

The façade, gabled and plainly plastered, is located to the north, oriented along the north-south axis, and features a central arched portal. The church consists of a single, barrel-vaulted rectangular nave. The interior is completely plastered and has a lower vaulted ceiling with a pitched roof.

The quadrangular and slightly raised presbytery ends with a flat apse that houses the entrances to the sacristy. Next to the church stands the bell tower. Valuable elements include the stained-glass windows dedicated to the fallen and missing of Bollone during World War II and silver and brass sacred objects dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Every year, on the last Sunday of September, the Patron Saint is celebrated with a procession along the village streets, carrying the statue of San Michele Arcangelo, which is kept in the church.

The Madonna Immacolata (Mary Immaculate) is also venerated in Bollone and her feast day is celebrated on 8 December.
